Our Story
Tupuna Pai was founded with a clear purpose — to build AI that thinks the way an Indigenous leader thinks. Commercial viability matters. Operational performance matters. And so does the land, the people, and the next generation.
Tupuna Pai was built for organisations that refuse to choose between them.
The name Tupuna Pai means Good Ancestor. It reflects the founding principle — that every decision should be measured against what future generations inherit from it.
Tupuna Pai was founded by Phil Kupenga, a Māori tech leader and professional from the East Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand. Phil brings lived experience of Te Ao Māori alongside deep expertise in business analysis, IT strategy, and AI development.

Governance intelligence grounded in an Indigenous worldview
Our mission is to help organisations make decisions that are transparent, accountable, and aligned with long-term values alongside short-term results — because sustainable organisations need both.
We do this by building AI advisory systems grounded in the organisation's own knowledge, values, and cultural frameworks. The result is a platform that feels genuinely theirs — because it is built from what they already know and believe.
Tupuna Pai works for Māori and indigenous organisations, government agencies, corporate sustainability teams, and any values-led enterprise that measures success in generations not quarters.
Our Mission
What we do
Tupuna Pai is a bespoke AI decision advisory platform. For each client we build a dedicated system loaded with their own strategic knowledge, values frameworks, and governance context.
When a decision needs to be made — on land, on investment, on community, on governance — Tupuna Pai provides structured analysis grounded in the organisation's own knowledge. Not generic AI advice. Their knowledge. Their values. Their decisions.
Every response follows a structured seven-step framework — assessing Taiao alignment, decision options, KPI impact, Four Pou values scoring, risk analysis, a clear recommendation, and an intergenerational narrative that closes every response with the mokopuna question.
The platform works across sectors and geographies. The Indigenous worldview that grounds it is universal in its application — any organisation making decisions with long-term consequences can benefit from thinking this way.

Our Approach

Indigenous Worldview at the Centre
We build AI that starts where an Indigenous leader starts — with the land, the community, and the next generation. The natural world is not a resource to optimise. It is a relative to protect. That principle applies whether the organisation is a Māori farming trust, a government agency, or a corporate with genuine sustainability commitments.

Your Knowledge — Your System
Every Tupuna Pai deployment is bespoke. We load the client's own strategic plans, values frameworks, cultural protocols, and governance context. The AI responds from that knowledge — not from the internet, not from generic training data. Your knowledge stays yours.

Human Oversight by Design
Every query and response is logged in a complete audit trail. Governance committees can review AI interactions at any time. The human is always in the loop. AI advises. People decide. This is not autonomous AI — it is AI operating under human governance.
Knowledge Sovereignty
At Tupuna Pai we treat organisational knowledge as taonga — a treasure.
Whether that knowledge is held in a 100-year whenua plan, a corporate sustainability strategy, a governance framework or the lived experience of a community — it belongs to the organisation and deserves to be treated with integrity.
Every Tupuna Pai deployment is a dedicated bespoke system.
Client data never sits alongside another organisation's data.
Knowledge is not shared, sold, or used to train AI models.
It remains sovereign — theirs to own, theirs to govern, theirs to protect.
For Māori and indigenous organisations this is Māori Data Sovereignty in practice.
For all organisations this is responsible AI by design.

Tupuna Pai was developed alongside Whāngārā Farms — a Māori-owned sheep and beef farming enterprise managing 8,834 hectares on the East Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Whāngārā Farms are not just a test case. They are the founding partner who brought the knowledge, the values, and the vision that shaped everything Tupuna Pai is.
Their He Rau Ake Ake 100-year Whenua Optimisation Plan — developed through years of community engagement with over 70 participants — is the knowledge base that proves what this platform can do.
When Whāngārā Farms team members use Tupuna Pai they get responses grounded in their own farm, their own whakapapa, their own 100-year vision.
That is the standard every Tupuna Pai client receives — wherever they are in the world.

Future Vision
Tupuna Pai is built to scale across sectors and geographies.
Our primary market is Māori and indigenous governance organisations — where the platform's worldview is most naturally at home.
From there we extend to government agencies, corporate sustainability teams, and any values-led enterprise making decisions with long-term consequences.
Internationally the Indigenous worldview that grounds Tupuna Pai resonates with First Nations organisations in Canada and Australia, Pacific governance bodies, and global sustainability-focused enterprises seeking a governance framework that goes beyond compliance and reporting.
The platform framework stays constant. The knowledge, values, and cultural context changes for each client. That is the architecture that makes genuine scale possible without sacrificing genuine specificity.
Our vision is a world where every organisation making decisions about land, community, and future generations has access to AI that thinks the way they think.
Message from the Founder
I am Māori. I grew up with a deep sense that everything is connected — the land, the mountain, the river, the people. Not as a concept. As lived reality.
I have also spent years watching organisations and people say one thing and do another. Not out of bad intent. Out of pressure.
The pressure of business, of survival, of short-term decisions made under difficult circumstances. I understood the irony. I felt it.
What I kept coming back to was this — our people, our whenua, our communities deserve decision-making tools that reflect what we actually believe. Not just what we say we believe when it is easy.
Tupuna Pai is my attempt to bring that gap into the room. To give decision-makers — and the shareholders and whānau they are accountable to — a way to see whether decisions align with the values an organisation carries.
I am not the authority on any of this. Our tūpuna are. Our kaumātua are. The land itself is. I am simply someone who saw the pattern, felt the cost of it, and decided to build something.
